changed the text at the bottom from the broken text following the squares to block text. This looks more professional and actually fits into my concept a lot better as it is very rigid, traditional text design expressing the feeling of being trapped
even though I chose originally to use a lower case ' v " in velvet due to the use of velvet in the script by David Lynch is a lower case and within lyrics of the song Blue velvet by Bobby Vinton. However Sue brought it up to me that it looks unbalanced.
I wanted to change the overlapped images because I didn't like them visually and this spread is meant to be stricter following the grid.
changed the timings of some of the videos to fit with the song sound effect more and took some videography because I felt some areas felt too cluttered for this stage of the publication
In my tutorial it was highlighted to me that a lot of people including me haven't followed the colour specific brief enough as it asks us to create a publication with only two colours : Blue and black/white
- I was instructed to make versions of my film clips in the duo tone colour palette and my expanded blue palette of different shades to place in my portfolio.
- However for the printing it needs to be duo toned
So below I've colour swatched key moments of blue in the film " blue velvet " or from the infamous movie posters to highlight what number of RGB I should use
I am leaning more towards the lighter colours as when printing out my publication roughly the lighter blues showed more detail and was less swallowed up by the blacks.
- I want to use black as my accompanying colour to my RGB as it represents the darkness and trauma associated with the movie
- Also within the 'Blue Velvet' - known as a Neo-noir genre of movie black is used a lot annd evidently ^ in the movie posters also
- a lighter blue will show more contrast to the black and therefore help to tell my story of lighter to darker sexual acts well
this was a very long process as I had to
change the settings for each spread to the
particular colour of duo tone for each spread.
However I am very happy with the results
Had to start of black and white,
to then change the RGB numbers
to create my chosen blue
I experimented with darker blues from the colour swatched above and it drowned out the text to much therefore not legible, and the imagery was not as clear and impactful
* above are not final spreads *
I am extremely happy with the outcome of this colour change. It fits the brief a lot more, it looks more professional and cohesive and the colour gradient is still as prominent as it wa before, I would argue possibly even more obvious. ( which is something I was sacred of when changing to duotone )
My choices of screenshots for my cover and final page. I created this video at the seat of the project. It is the opening scene to Blue Velvet and it is a foreshadowing of the movies plot, by a seemingly happy neighbourhood to unveiling the dirt beneath ( beetles crawling in soil )
Then I want to match the hue of my RGB number blue at the end of the publication : darker tones:
I actively chose not to place any imagery of the
beetles in this end distortion clip as I have used this very
frequently within the spreads as I divided it into 10 parts
that I collaged into my moving image
I want the cover page to be breaking the grid
to relate to the start of the publication
using the same grid as spread 9 to create a cohesive
flow from the spreads to the end page
-not of spread 10 as this was too broken
up for large amounts of text to follow.
it made more sense to include the full opening scene of blue velvet as the end page to the publication as I plan to quote this as the text. This was such an important inspiration for the route of my project, so to tie in the 10 clipped clips of this video throughout my publication, to band it all together this will be presented.
- I made sure the colour palette resembled the darker hues of the blue to remain cohesive with the publication
I wanted the writing to feel like it was breaking thew grid
like the first spreads
text following 12 x 12 grid. Text uniformed and
together - traditional following of grid.
-strict
- final I wan the block of text to the right to signify
that this sexual assault visualised through my publication
is evergoing and very prominent if you look beneath the
layer
I created these warped typography layers collage over the top of the videography in the back and front pages. Just to bring some life to the typography and some movement
- created through aftereffects and photomosh
